Does counting count?

From YourSwimBook four reasons why you should be counting your strokes in practice:
Encourages better efficiency in the water
Encourages better breakouts
It keeps you focused on technique and form
Becomes second nature after a while
I consider counting strokes essential when I train without a coach timing me. When it becomes impossible to work on the race pace, this is the most powerfull tool I can use.
And works well for all strokes and even for underwater kicking.
